20 Questions with Harriet Forde, Founder and Director of Harriet Forde Design

We sat down with Harriet Forde, founder and director of Harriet Forde Design, and asked 20 rapid-fire questions about juggling, yoga on the beach, being an urbanite, and everything in between.


Who is your design style icon?
I don’t have anyone specifically, but I do find Joseph Dirand’s work very pleasing.

What’s the more valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?
Don’t be afraid to say you don’t understand something - this industry is a lifelong learning curve. On a practical level, check, check and check again!

What’s your least favourite design trend of all time?
Anything brown velveteen.


Where is your ‘happy place’?
Yoga on a beach at sunset

What is your go-to karaoke song?
Staying Alive – Bee Gees….very topical!

What is your favourite era?
New York in the late 1970’s – minus any brown velveteen.

What is the last movie that made you cry?
Actually, I can't remember as I’m a box set addict. I cried when Mrs. America (BBC Iplayer) ended ‘cos I wanted more and those women were phenomenal!

How do you take your tea/coffee?
Decaf, decaf, decaf…with milk or I am a maniac by lunchtime. I also have a passion for Greek cappuccino freddo’s when I am there.

What’s the most useless talent you have?
I can juggle three tennis balls against a wall


Are you a morning or evening person?
Morning, but not too early!

What fashion trend needs to be brought back?
It's more what needs to be stopped….throw away fashion of any trend is a travesty.

What is your favourite city in the world?
I’m quite an urbanite and so I get a thrill from a fast-paced environment like Hong Kong but these days I also need to find an oasis within the busyness to enjoy the buzz.

What’s your favourite thing to treat yourself to?
Anything that involves body work…I’m having an hour and a half reflexology this afternoon

What is your favourite song to sing in the shower?
I have to do voice warm-ups in the shower as I have a vocal chord problem at the moment….Twinkle Twinkle Little Star can often be heard from the bathroom in the morning!


What’s your favourite colour?
Impossible to say, I just love so many but probably I love colour from nature the most, the intensity always pulls me in.

What is your favourite thing in your home?
Aside from all the humans and pets, a painting of a Japanese girl that was my grandmothers

If you had to choose...countryside or city?
City, full on gritty…no suburbia thanks

If you had to choose...window seat or aisle seat?
Window, in first-class please?!

If you had to choose...dogs or cats?
Gosh, I have one of both…..but probably cat as they don’t require walking when it rains.

If you had to choose...chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla, it’s a good base to add more yummy flavours too.
