Interior Insights: April Russell

For the second part in the Interior Insights series April Russell discusses creating beautiful bespoke furniture, the value of handmade and the philosophy behind her company:

We were delighted to exhibit April's Bunny Bar on our stand at Decorex 2015, which certainly gained a lot of attention for the striking orange used on the interior. We therefore had a few short questions we couldn't resist to ask in order to discover the way April uses colour within her work:

1.  Your Bunny Bar is a great example of craftsmanship, bringing together history and enjoyment, especially with the "pop of colour". Why was it important to introduce colour to this piece, and how did you choose this particular colour?

I like to go off track and the pop of colour is unexpected. As for choosing it, I am totally addicted to burnt orange. It is a happy colour and it is a colour that works well with so many other colours. Orange is warm and works in all seasons.

2. Within your projects, especially residential interiors, you often introduce these "pops of colour" into the space. Is a bold colour something you believe should be present within an interior?

I decorate in layers starting with a neutral background and build up from there, bearing in mind a focus which usually is the art or perhaps an existing rug. Pops of colour can be in smaller doses and can be added or removed when required. Again pops of colour is the voice that says I'm here look at me!

3. Finally, if you could give one piece of advice for introducing colour within a space, what would it be?

Don't go with trends. Be sure you can live with that colour day in and day out. Perhaps go subtle so you have flexibility to enhance the subtleness with different objects and textures the make the statement!
